How can you train a dog? Or is it not even possible?

From what I have read here on YA, I have determined that dogs can not be housebroken. As puppies, they jump on people, bite children, and whine all the time. They get fleas, ticks, and worms, which are not the owner’s fault, of course! They like to do damage by chewing up wires, cats, and even couches! So, instead of keeping them, people want to get rid of them since they "have no possitive qualities"!

But, then I see a question that states that dogs can be "trained"! What is this allusive training? What doesn’t anyone else know about it? Is this just something that a "secret" society knows about and won’t share with the rest of us?

TELL ME WHAT IS GOING ON!!!!

Dog training is no secret, but it is work. And "work" is the second secret to successful training.

The first?

You have to be smarter than the dog.

i trained my dog by properly socializing him, exercising him, teaching him basic commands, and crate training.
Half the people that want to get rid of their dog just need to exercise their dog and pay some attention to him.Dogs are not disposable they are not meant to be passed from home to home whenever they do something bad. Dogs aren’t born understanding english or house trained , people need to realize training is mandatory .

lol, they can be trained easily with a little know-how. In most of the cases you refer to, it is the person that needs the training

Have you tried caging him. Is he a stray or did he used to be an outside door. No matter his age, you may want to cage train him. I have a Jack Russel Terrier that pissed in my apt w/tile floor for 3 years, then I moved into a house and got a doggy door and she doesn’t do it anymore. She didn’t stop peeing because of the doggie door, but because she is in a new place. She never marked a spot from day 1.

BUT, I know crate training works. My mom found a 57 lb male Rottweiler walking the hot streets in Pompano Beach. She adopted him and now he is an indoor dog. He was peeing in her house until two weeks ago (she cleans with bleach or this stuff called "Fabuloso" It works great and kinda smells so clean dog avoid peeing in that area because of same. She gives him water and lets him out (in the morning) for as long as he wants to stay out, then he barks to come in. When he went to pee (when she saw him about to lift his leg) she sprayed him in the head, eye, ear, butt, w/the same water bottle she waters her plants with. It always shocked him and yelled NO. He stopped peeing in the house and now stays in the kitchen (she shuts the other doors) while she is at work and he doesn’t piss. He completely stopped.

Good luck with your dog. Don’t give up and don’t give it away, Its not doing it on "purpose". Even though it probably pisses directly in front of you. Dogs rules.

    SPAY & NEUTER Please.

Yes. It IS a secret society.

    Want to join?

First, you have to have common sense. Then you have to think why you want a dog. Figure out if you have the proper home/environment to house a dog. Then you have to decide if you have the time and patience to deal with a dog. Then you need to have incentive and initiative to get off your duff and research how to care for and train a dog. Buy books, buy videos. Then, using intelligence, research breeds….not just look at pictures and say to yourself "oooo that’s soooooooo cute!" Then find a true, knowledgeable, responsible breeder and go and see their dogs IN PERSON. Ask them for for their knowledge and help. And must enroll dog in training classes to learn how to train your dog if you haven’t successfully trained dogs of your own before.

Then THINK some more before you buy. Then, if you haven’t learned enough, read some more.

Believe me … I really do understand your frustrations.
I hope that some people here have learned from those who know better, that their misbehaved dogs really don’t have to be that way. I suppose that’s why I keep coming back …

This illusive training is called work. And since many people in this country are opposed to hard work, they therefore cannot possibly have trained dogs.

These are the same people that reason with their 2 year old children WHY they aren’t to throw toys. They have conversations with their kids as if they were adults. They talk to their dogs expecting them to understand.

Training is work – but it is not unachievable. People will spend 500.00 on an Xbox, 500.00 on a digital camera, 45.00 a month on internet, 1600.00 or more on that cool LCD HDTV, but they won’t spend 85.00 for 6 weeks of dog training.

Lucky was in class tonight and in TWO weeks has really really made a turn around – even the trainer was pleased with his progress. But you know what – it’s an everyday thing for us. 45 minutes minimum a day walking and another 30-40 minutes a day working on sits, downs, stays, and so on. It’s work. And people want fast food dog training, drive through dog training, they want that magically perfect dog that just doesn’t exist.
