New boxer puppy, How to train?
I rescued a boxer puppy 2 days ago. Brought him to the vet, got him taken care of for now, and now I’m trying to train him. But, this is my first dog and I know nothing about training boxers. He’s about 6 weeks old, any help training him with teething, playing, etc would be greatly appreciated, or point me in the direction of somewhere that could help. I might also mention I’m strapped for money right now, so I can’t afford formal puppy training.
Check out the book "New Dog" by Dr. Bruce Fogle. It’s basically a step-by-step to bringing a new puppy home. It has the basics from house training and teething to teaching commands and finding a trainer for more serious issues. There is also a section about common beahioural issues like destrcutive chewing and seperation anxiety. I reccomend it to any first-time dog owner.

There are also some great books available FREE(!) at your local library. Just search "dog training" and there will be at least one classic that has tried and true methods for starting off with your puppy.
Here are some you should particularily look for (that SHOULD be in a library, since they are considered "classics" in dog training):
Good Owners, Great Dogs, by Brian Kilcommons

I’m in a small city and these were all available at my library. They are pretty standard, and widely accepted resources (not "fad" training techniques). I especially liked "What All Good Dogs Should Know", it was very straight-forward.
Good Luck!
How To Train A New Dog/puppy
You love your dog. But at one time I bet he/she was a bit too much too handle. Training your dog takes time and a whole lot of patience. Any dog owner who’s been through basic dog obedience training can tell just how tough it can be. But, the fact of the matter is, if you don’t start training your dog to be obedient early on, you’re going to end up with a problematic pooch.
Many dog owners will suggest taking your dog to a dog obedience training class. These classes will help you tame your dog and even learn to socialize with other dogs if the training is in a group setting. However, there are ways you can begin to train your dog at home.
Basic Dog Obedience Training Home Tips
Use Your Pet’s Name
To build control and relation with your dog, you need to use his/her name frequently when training and giving commands. This will help build name recognition and strengthen the relationship with you, his/her owner. Even for the most basic commands or activities, use your dog’s name when involved in all activities, even feeding time.
Use a Leash
Leash training involves collaring and leashing your dog. Through the use of a leash, you can teach your dog commands and actions. At first, you want to show your dog the command by positioning your dog accordingly (e.g. placing him/her in the “sit” position). You also want to verbalize the command while positioning. After positioning your dog a few times, say the command and then use the leash to exert force, but not too much. A slight tug on the leash should do. Each time you state the command, use the leash. Work with your dog until he/she demonstrates understanding of the command. When you dog obeys the command correctly, reward him/her with a “good PET NAME” and pet him/her on the head. Leash training doesn’t involve rewarding your pet with treats, as it works against leash training and gives your dog a reason to obey other than just obeying the command..
Use Reward Training
Reward training works similar to leash training except that instead of using a leash to assert the command, you use a reward (e.g. a treat) to coax your dog into obeying. This method of training does show results, however some experts say that this method doesn’t exert the force necessary to teach your dog to obey and also establish the owner/pet relationship.
Be Firm
When training your dog, you need to stand your ground and be firm. It’s easy to give into your cute and cuddly pet, especially if it’s still a puppy, but if you want to train them right, you need to be firm. There’s no need to punish your dog, you just need to be patient and work with your dog as much as possible until he/she understands the command. Work with your dog until the command is followed and obeyed precisely as desired. This means even after your dog has learned the command, you still need to assert a firm command to ensure that your dog won’t forget the command or get into bad habits.
If you want an obedient dog, you need to involve Fido in basic dog obedience training. The best bet is to enroll them into a class, but you can also start training them at home. The earlier you start and the better your obedience training, the better behaved your dog will be.

Training Your Dog the Right Way
A lot of dog owners want to train their dogs either for housebreaking or competition purposes. There are many advantages to training your dog. Well trained dogs are easier to take care of. And you can also use the pet for several purposes other than merely making it your best friend.
If you train your dog right, you will be able to use your pet as a guard dog, a helper, or even a sled runner, if you must.
Here are tips when training your dog:
1. Establish a good dog-owner relationship with your pet.
You have to establish trust with your pet. Only through this you will be able to teach your dog some tricks. Don’t worry. Dogs are naturally trusting animals, especially if their masters are good to them. It is quite easy to establish trust with your pet. You just have to feed it right, give it treats, and play with it from time to time.
2. Build confidence and control.
Control is very important. Control means directing your dog to do the things it is supposed to do and make it stop doing things it shouldn’t. You can control your dog with the use of strict words. Strict doesn’t mean harsh. Know the difference between the two. When you give commands to your pet, be sure that you’re firm enough and stand by it.
3. Make your dog happy and outgoing.
A happy dog is a lot easier to train. It is the same with people. If you’re in a good mood, you are more likely to do things right. The disposition is the same with your pet. Strive to keep your dog happy so that any day becomes a good day for training. An outgoing dog is a free-spirited dog. These are the dogs that can be ideally trained.
4. Know your dog’s natural drives.
Your dog has its own natural pleasure and drives. Make sure that you know what these are so you can use it to your advantage. Dogs can easily be trained if you use their natural instincts. With the right motivation, the entire dog training process can be a jiffy.
5. Don’t use cruelty when training.
Cruelty doesn’t work well with pets. Never use harsh punishments or cruelty when teaching your dog anything. Dogs would trust you less if you hurt it. This won’t help you at all. It is best that you use firm but doting words instead. Dogs would easily be trained if it is not subjected to harsh elements.
Training your dog is quite a job. Keep in mind that everything can’t be achieved overnight. It can’t even be done in a week either. You have to be very patient. This means that you have to know your dog’s limit. This way, you’ll be able to groom and train your pet in the right manner. There would be trial and errors in the whole process. Be sure that you are mentally and physically fit for the challenge.

Dog Training Tips for the New Dog Owner
Let’s face it, for many people training their dog is a struggle that sooner or later leads them to just give up and let their dog do whatever he pleases. Then they ask themselves why they have such a disobedient dog. More experienced dog owners know that dog training is something that is always going on. Whenever they are with their dog they are always training him. Going for walks, playing in the park, even just relaxing around the house are all opportunities to teach.
Dogs by nature are curious creatures who get easily bored. If there is not a proper outlet for this boredom they will find something to do. And to a dog who doesn’t know the difference chewing up a shoe or digging holes in the yard is neither good nor bad. It’s just something to do. The more a dog learns to please himself and do whatever he wants the less control his owner will have. A disobedient dog does not just happen; by ignoring, mistreating or being lackadaisical about training him he will learn all sorts of bad behaviors all by himself.
Dogs love to please their owners but without feedback they have no idea if they are doing right or wrong. Everything is the same to them. This is why it is important to praise a dog when they are being obedient. Positive reinforcement is one of the most powerful dog training tools a dog owner can use.
Many people do not realize the amount of work needed to train some of the more amazing dogs they see on TV or here about in news reports. Police dogs, seeing eye dogs, military dogs can take a good year of intense training to get them to the point where they can even start working in that capacity. And their training never stops. Dogs do not come trained and they will not learn simply because they inhabit the same space as their owners. Dogs have no inborn sense of right and wrong; everything is the same to them, unless they are taught.
Dog training is all about teaching a dog good behavior. Repetition is the name of the game when it comes to having an obedient dog. Combined with praise for a job well done a dog will soon learn what its boundaries are and who is actually in charge. The first thing every dog should learn is their name. This is what gets their attention and simply saying it should stop them dead in their tracks from whatever they are doing. From there on a dogs training should be a daily routine; housetraining, sitting, staying, not barking or jumping up on people, these are things that will make life with a dog easier and much more enjoyable.

Dog Training & How It May Save Your Life
If you are a dog owner, you have probably heard numerous heroic news stories where a dog has dialed 911, awoken their owner during a dangerous situation or even detected an illness with their keen sense of smell. This type of dog training may require enrollment in a special center specifically used for the purpose of training animals to respond to certain medical or emergency situations. Although the cost of professional medical or rescue training is often very expensive, the results can be priceless.
The Pine Street Foundation recently conducted a study that revealed how a canine’s nose may be able to detect cancer. The research involved five professionally trained scent dogs, whose noses were used as “medical devices” during the experiment. The results were astounding with an average accuracy of 90% when it came to distinguishing between the breath samples of cancer patients and those who were healthy. Of 169 total subjects, 55 had been diagnosed with lung cancer, 31 with breast cancer and 83 were used as healthy controls. Labrador retrievers, one of the most popular dog breeds in America, made up the majority of the scent dogs used in the study by the Pine Street Foundation. At the conclusion, the organization had performed over 12,000 trials in a four-month investigation. The dogs were believed to be able to detect both early and late stages of the cancers and, according to the Pine Street Foundation, even ordinary dogs can be trained to detect cancer with only a breath sample.
In addition to medical use, professional dog training may used for rescue and/or emergency response actions. Some dogs may be trained to help those with eyesight problems and may even be able to help with everyday tasks, such as getting the morning paper, dialing emergency numbers and acting as a guide when outdoors. For others who have disabilities involving movement, professional dog training may be used to teach dogs how to act as a brace for someone who needs help getting dressed or other necessary activities that often require a little extra help.
Because of their high level of intelligence, labrador retrievers are often used as rescue dogs. In order to effectively learn the necessary techniques, however, dog training with a specialization in rescue may be required. All dogs love their owners and would often do anything possible to save them from a dangerous situation. As their protective instincts take over, dogs may become a very passionate defender or often a rescuer for those that they love. In addition to benefitting your dog, the proper dog training may just save your life one day and there is no better reward for either you or your pet.
There are many great resources for dog training available on the internet. One of the best ways to find these resources is by reading independent reviews and comparison rankings. In this way you can be confident your pet is getting best training possible.
