How would I teach my dog to give the ball back during fetch?
When I through the ball for my dog, he goes and runs and gets it, but then he wont give it back!
Even if I reach for the ball out of his mouth, he growls!
How can I teach him to give the ball back when playing fetch?

This assumes the dog has come back to you with the ball. Don’t try to take the ball out of his mouth. Instead try stroking the side of his face (if he will let you), while calmly and happily saying "Give" (try not to say it too many times per ball return). Then praise the dog if he gives it up, or at least drops it. You may want to up the reward level to a treat, preferably temporarily until the dog gets the idea.

The two-ball idea is good too.

Also he may want to play tug-of-war, which recent dog theory says is okay – they used to say it caused more aggression. So get a ball with a rope or another dangler you can grab onto.

Keep it positive, and don’t teach your dog not to growl. The growl is one of only a few ways the dog has of communicating with you. Go for positive reinforcement.

Best way to teach your dog basic tricks?

What’s the best way to teach your dog to heel or fetch?

Reward them with dog treats whenever they do something right. Vary it with praise and affection. Always reinforce the good behavior that you want. No point punishing bad behavior, it only frightens the dog of you and they don’t understand cause and effect, anyway. Set aside training time each day, it doesn’t have to be much, 15 minutes to an hour a day. Most dogs are enthusiastic learners–they like pleasing you and of course they are interested in the treats. And they do like to learn. A good lesson for a dog to learn is to stop and sit down at every curb, it can save their life. Good luck!

How do you teach a dog to fetch?

My dog is a husky mix named chomper. I’ve tried everything to teach him to fetch. Got any tips?

Step1
Throw the first ball and let your dog go after it. When your dog starts to come towards you, ask your dog to "drop it."
Step2
If your dog does not drop the ball, stop paying any attention to your dog and take out the second ball.
Step3
Start to have fun with the second ball. Toss it up in the air. Act like you’re having a great time with the second ball. Keep doing this until your dog looks at you. If you’ve done this step correctly, your dog will drop the ball that he/she has and look up at the one you have.
Step4
As soon as your dog drops his/her ball, show the ball you’re holding to your dog. As soon as your dog focuses on the ball that you’re holding, throw it.
Step5
Repeat the process when your dog comes back to you. Within a short period of time, you’ll have your dog retrieving for you.
