How do I train my puppy to run parallel?

I just got a 3 month old pure GSD, I want it to be the kind of dogs that runs parallel to you (which it is having trouble doing…it likes coming in the middle somehow) and stops and sits when you stop. Eventually I even want to let it off to the leash to that it knows how it should run…but as for now this is my goal. Also any other tips on how I can train it to be a personal protection dog. Thanks

Formal obedience training teaches a good heel, 3 months is about right to start a fun puppy obedience class, though his little brain won’t have the attention span or maturity to really do anything serious until he is 12-24 months old. A professional trainer who can provide the hands-on, step-by-step solutions is really what you need, someone who’s "been there" with a lot of dogs and has a full "tool box" of remedies to common problems. They will be able to see and correct problems as they occur in class and help you know what’s normal and what’s not as your puppy grows and learns.

Good luck!

How to house train puppy fast?

I have a 9 week old Pomeranian/Papillion mix puppy (mostly acts like a Pomeranian) and I need some tips to potty train her? (We are training her on one of those indoor grass potty patches) She is doing pretty well, but doesn’t exactly understand the concept of going #2 on the grass patch. She goes tinkle on it great, but the #2 part … I really need some tips (I know the typical, love her and give her treats her when she goes on the patch, move her to it when she sniffs around on the ground etc.) Help please? :)
And the grass patch is great.. She still goes on real grass people! Sheesh!

Try this. At 9 wks old I’m sure your puppy is eating two to three times a day. Immediately after the puppy walks away from her food bowl, showing she is done, take her to where you want her to go to the bathroom. I used to even rub their bellies a bit, to get things moving! Wierd, I know, but it works! Once you get to where the "potty" is, tell to "hurry up. Make poopy." Alsop sounds weird, but it worked! It takes patience but it will happen! IMy puppy, now 3 yrs old, never had an accident!! Good Luck!

How to teach my dog to get me a kleenex?

My aunt’s friend’s dogs know a trick that I want to teach my dog. The owner gives the command "Achoo!" and the dog gets a tissue from the box that’s on the floor, and then brings it back to them. How can I teach my dog to do this?
I have seen and heard of it multiple times, so it is possible.

You would have to teach in many small phases. First teach touch, then teach touch the item, then teach take it, then take the item, then further back until you can command from a distance, then you’d need to add the achoo and fetch etc. Complicated tricks are taught in small steps one step at a time, you’ve got to walk before you can run. My dog will close the door on command, first I made sure she knew touch, had her touch my hand, then moved to a post it note, then put the post it on the door, so she was touching the door, then removed post it to just touching the door, then worked on having her jump up at the door while it was slightly open to have her push the door shut (i reward after every correct behavior) kept this up until she was jumping up to close the door, then I worked on giving the command further back and then further back and finally I could be sitting on my bed and tell her to close the door. Eventually over time she stopped jumping up and started using her nose to maneuver the door shut and now pushes it closed with her nose.

All of this took time, but when she did the behavior I wanted she got a treat so she would make the connection, I found that once she’s gotten the trick down I will withhold treats, by doing so she has learned to modify her original trick and take it one step further in an attempt to get the reward, such as no longer jumping up to push the door but to using her nose to move and then push the door shut, once she did this new behavior then she got the reward and that’s how she learned the behavior.

Good luck, complicated tricks take much longer to learn but remember, if the dog isn’t getting it then you’re not teaching in a way the dog understands or you’re moving too fast for the dog to pick it up, re-evaluate your methods and start again.

How to stop 11 mo. old puppy from chewing up everything in sight?

We adopted a sheltered dog last February (boxer/pitbull mix) and he will chew anything of interest to him, especially leather shoes on the floor. I need suggestions on how to train him not to do this. Know this is common in puppies.

I also have a 8 month old boxer, I adopted. I have done tons of research on these type dogs. they are beautiful dogs, and bond with the people they live with. Boxers has to RUN. It is called the Boxer Burn, meaning a couple times a day, let them out in the yard and let them run, they require this type of exercise, or they will eat your sofa, lol. My boxer is like greased lighting, and can run a 1000 feet in 5 seconds or less. I know they like rag type toys, Pet Smart and Pet Co has these toys..I took my dog to training classes, and it help about 75%, but I still work with her every day. Like any dog, they have to learn what not to destroy. There are good dog training information on the Net, that teaches them to LEAVE IT, DROP IT. These two commands are very important.
Most important thing is they have got to run and run a lot. Good luck and thanks for adopting a shelter dog.
