How to train puppy recall *with distractions!?

Hi

I have a 16 week old puppy, she is pretty good off the lead when there are no distractions as she just follows my older obedient labrador around. However if there are other people especially kids, runners etc she will go up to them and want to play, also she goes up to other dogs in the park. When we call her back she just ignores us and carries on.

Obviously I don’t want her doing this as you don’t know whether other dogs are going to turn round and attack etc and a lot of people don’t like dogs especially excitable puppies.

How do I train her to not go up to others in the park etc? is it best to use a long line? or take treats/toys etc?

thanks

PS we don’t let her off when there are other people /dogs around now.

it is normal. some dogs (retrievers) are only consistently capable of coming on call only after 2 years of age. until then, they are just puppies.

a good thing is to ask other people who are playing with her, to stop the attention to the dog once the dog is being called. or, tell them to say the command "where’s your master/handler" when they stop the play and vector the dog back to you. (we did this in the training ground. you just cannot have twenty dogs on a long leash in the same place)

also, try several calls back after releasing from the leash, only from several meters apart.. repeatedly. it helps a lot to keep the dog focused on your calls (it is not yupee, free of leash.. zooom but more of … she’s gonna call me back anytime soon. i stay ready)

Puppy training tips needed!?

So… this is my first puppy… I’ve adopted dogs in the past and trained them just fine, but I have no idea where to start with this puppy… she doesn’t respond the same as the dogs have, she doesn’t like treats, she doesn’t understand when i tell her good girl, or bad girl, i just need some puppy training tips from anyone who has done this before, i’m open to anything and everything positive, i’ve tried correcting her and punishing her before, and she does not respond well to punishment, she thinks i’m always mad at her when i’m not, so i need positive training help. things like "come, sit, stay, shake" not chewing on trash or the furniture, leash training, crate training, etc… i bought a book, that didn’t seem to help much, it wasn’t very personal, so if anyone wants to let me know any of their secrets, that would be amazing, thanks everyone!!!! <3 <3 <3

Puppies aren’t like dogs. They don’t retain what your telling them and they dont understand your words. It will take probably a year to train a puppy properly if you put a lot of time and effort into it. This is because there brain is to small to remember things. One way you can teach them is by show them what to do. When you say shake put her paw on your hand and shake her paw. This way she knows what you mean. Then ask her again and do the same as before. The third time you do it place her paw in your hand and shake it but praise her. Then it’ll start to click. Do this over and over and then in a month start letting her place her paw in your hand if she hasn’t started already. The same works for come sit and stay. You make her do the action give her love for letting you show her. Then you keep it up till she gets the hang of it. By the 3 or 4 month she should start being enforced with negative reinforcements along with positive. When she doesn’t respond simply don’t let her lick you and act like your ignoring her this will make he realize what she did is bad. The best treat to a puppy is love.

How to get my puppy to walk on the left side of me and not jerk the leash and go crazy?

My puppy is 12 weeks old.

I am going to review some training books, but I have to train him to walk on a leash, due to where I live.

Sometimes, he does just fine but mostly, he sniffs the ground and tries to eat mushrooms constantly, or he jerks the leash and goes nuts as if he has rabies and runs in circles on the leash.

Or else, he attacks my feet and legs, biting me until he breaks the skin.

What can I do to teach him better?

Wait. You should just be practicing the leash at this age. I don’t clip a leash on the collar until 3-months-old and they get better on the walk between 4 and 5-months-old. It is only 5 minutes for each month of age with the walk, so a three-month-old puppy gets a 15 minute walk. Too much walking is bad for legs and joints. When my puppies are first little, I practice with the leash. In the house, I drape the leash on them and try to call them to me. Outside, I practice in my fenced back yard for about a month before the puppy graduates to the street. I might drape the leash on the puppy and get him to follow me, or drag the leash on the ground and see if he will follow me and try to catch the leash. There are many things in my back yard that scare a puppy, so it is so much easier to address, or correct issues when I am in my back yard and not in the street. We just walk laps in the yard and deal with drama as it comes up. Maybe around 3-months-old I might try to clip the leash to the collar, but if there is too much protesting, I drop the leash. They just get better with the leash around 4 to 5-months-old. So anyway, I use the commands "go" when I want to "go" and if the puppy tugs on the leash, I stop and say "wait". It is my walk and we go as fast as I can walk and no faster. If I want to "wait" and look at a flower, change the batteries in my walkman, count to ten, then I do it, it is my walk. When I am ready I say "go" and we "go" again. When the puppy pulls on the leash, I stop and say "wait" and we stop again, even if we just went two steps. I praise the puppy when he is doing good and talk soothing to him and encourage him when he is doing good, so he keeps doing it. It takes several laps of "go" and "wait" until he settles down, and when the walk is over, I make a big fuss and clap and then they get some play time. They don’t like the walk at first, but they like the fuss at the end. I have to address "go" and "wait" again the next day, but it won’t take me as long to get him to understand what I want from him. I also house sat a dog, and the owner thought he had leash issues, and that dog just didn’t like being in front. He walked just fine with my dogs as long as he could be part of the group, but he didn’t want to be in the front. If you have a family member, or a neighbor that has a dog that walks well, see if you can practice with them. I also had one dog that didn’t like the maroon leash, or the pink one, but did just fine with the blue leash. Sometimes puppies are just puppies.

how do i potty train a puppy if i am sleeping with it in my bed?

i have not gotten the puppy yet and i no that you have to let it out after meals naps when it wakes up and everything but do i take him out in the middle of the night i guess im asking. the puppy will be sleeping with me in my bed. how do i potty train him? thanks

Puppies have little bladders so they’re going to end up getting up at night to sleep. Instinctively, dogs don’t go to the bathroom where they sleep, but some break this rule.

Try taking him or her out right before bed and then just be aware when he stirs at night. And don’t worry about wondering how to be aware, it’s kind of like having a baby, you grow a sixth sense that keeps attention on the pup’s activities even when you’re asleep. At least that’s what has occurred with me and most of the people I’ve met in the same situation.

Crate training first is usually a good idea. It didn’t work for me though because my dog always knew she was going to end up in my bed, even before I decided that way. So she never slept until I put her in bed with me. =/
