toilet training puppy how to?

my shit zu is about 8 weeks old, he is going to be a 100% inside dog as i want to grow his coat beautiful and long and don’t need the dirt from outside to ruin it.
i have a puppy training mat (precision: little stinkers house breaking pads) and it is meant to attract him to it so he can do his business, i have had him for about a week and a half and he has been on the mat 4 times.

he just seems to go where ever he wants, on the carpet, on the lino, Absolutely anywhere, he doesn’t really go in the laundry where his food and bedding are, but that is where i have put the mat.

Every time he goes some where other than the mat if im fast enough i put him on the mat, to try adn associate the mess to the mat, he thinks it’s just like a bed and sometimes even sleeps on it, he plays with it, i just don’t think he is getting the idea.

What should i do?
How do i toilet train him? i have children who don’t like standing in little puppy puddles.

Please help me, i hate cleaning up poop :)
i would like to add, im not just keeping him inside because i want him to have a fabulous coat, im also keeping him in because i was recomended by my vet that keeping a small lap dog indoors makes him more content and i want to be close to my dog, im all for having gods run around outside, but he is tiny, and will always be tiny i dont want him to escape under a fence or something like that.

Your placement of the mat is likely the problem. Dogs do not like to do their business where they eat and sleep. That’s part of why you confine them or kennel them when they are young as part of potty training. I would first suggest moving the mat somewhere else. Second, one of the things recommended is that next time she goes, soak up some of the urine with the mat. This will help the dog associate the mat with a place to urinate. Generally speaking, when the dog is out, just take it over to the spot every hour or so to encourage the use. It will take time and patience, but first things first is to not have the mat where the puppy eats and sleeps.

How much does it cost to do puppy training at Petsmart?

I’m getting a Pomeranian puppy next weekend and I’d like to have her trained right away so that she can learn early. I went to the Petsmart website but it doesn’t say anything about the price. I was going to call, but i figured why not ask here. :) haha. Any help or even tips would be appreciated.

I use to be a PetSmart trainer and its going to depend on the area where you live. Here in Texas where I am we charge $109 for 8 weeks. In California is it more. That is why you won’t see prices on their website. When I first started training with them, the prices were $29 for puppy for 6 weeks, $39 for Basic. This was 11 years ago. Prices of the training has gone way up, but the training of the instructors is lots better too.
