How to train puppy recall *with distractions!?

Hi

I have a 16 week old puppy, she is pretty good off the lead when there are no distractions as she just follows my older obedient labrador around. However if there are other people especially kids, runners etc she will go up to them and want to play, also she goes up to other dogs in the park. When we call her back she just ignores us and carries on.

Obviously I don’t want her doing this as you don’t know whether other dogs are going to turn round and attack etc and a lot of people don’t like dogs especially excitable puppies.

How do I train her to not go up to others in the park etc? is it best to use a long line? or take treats/toys etc?

thanks

PS we don’t let her off when there are other people /dogs around now.

it is normal. some dogs (retrievers) are only consistently capable of coming on call only after 2 years of age. until then, they are just puppies.

a good thing is to ask other people who are playing with her, to stop the attention to the dog once the dog is being called. or, tell them to say the command "where’s your master/handler" when they stop the play and vector the dog back to you. (we did this in the training ground. you just cannot have twenty dogs on a long leash in the same place)

also, try several calls back after releasing from the leash, only from several meters apart.. repeatedly. it helps a lot to keep the dog focused on your calls (it is not yupee, free of leash.. zooom but more of … she’s gonna call me back anytime soon. i stay ready)

Puppy training tips needed!?

So… this is my first puppy… I’ve adopted dogs in the past and trained them just fine, but I have no idea where to start with this puppy… she doesn’t respond the same as the dogs have, she doesn’t like treats, she doesn’t understand when i tell her good girl, or bad girl, i just need some puppy training tips from anyone who has done this before, i’m open to anything and everything positive, i’ve tried correcting her and punishing her before, and she does not respond well to punishment, she thinks i’m always mad at her when i’m not, so i need positive training help. things like "come, sit, stay, shake" not chewing on trash or the furniture, leash training, crate training, etc… i bought a book, that didn’t seem to help much, it wasn’t very personal, so if anyone wants to let me know any of their secrets, that would be amazing, thanks everyone!!!! <3 <3 <3

Puppies aren’t like dogs. They don’t retain what your telling them and they dont understand your words. It will take probably a year to train a puppy properly if you put a lot of time and effort into it. This is because there brain is to small to remember things. One way you can teach them is by show them what to do. When you say shake put her paw on your hand and shake her paw. This way she knows what you mean. Then ask her again and do the same as before. The third time you do it place her paw in your hand and shake it but praise her. Then it’ll start to click. Do this over and over and then in a month start letting her place her paw in your hand if she hasn’t started already. The same works for come sit and stay. You make her do the action give her love for letting you show her. Then you keep it up till she gets the hang of it. By the 3 or 4 month she should start being enforced with negative reinforcements along with positive. When she doesn’t respond simply don’t let her lick you and act like your ignoring her this will make he realize what she did is bad. The best treat to a puppy is love.

How do you train your puppy how to go outside to do its buisness?

Please help me i have got a dog called Ollie he is 9 week old he is a boy and he is an English Springer Spaniel- He has been weeing inside on the living room floor and i cant stop him- He manages to do poos outside but he cant manage to do wees- What shall i do? Please help me!

It must be taken into your garden/yard every hour, after it eats or drinks and when it wakes up after a nap. You should also take it out just before you go to bed, every time you see it eliminate you must praise your puppy. I use a catch phrase when my puppy has a pee, I say “get one” while it is urinating and “big job” when it passes faeces. If you do this your dog will pee on command when it is older. (Unless it’s bladder is empty)

You should set your alarm and try to take your puppy out about twice during the night. If like me you are a heavy sleeper and you don’t trust yourself to wake up, take the lazy way out. My puppy’s sleep in the laundry room until they are toilet trained, during the day I dip newspapers into the urine which it has passed in the garden and put these on top of a thick pad of newspaper at night, they are drawn to this because of the smell and they will pee on this during the night. Nevertheless I go to bed very late and get up very early when I have a puppy.

Eventually your puppy will go to the door when it knows that it wants to eliminate. In spite of the fact that I leave newspapers down at night my puppy’s are clean from an early age. However they are like babies, they have no control until they are older. Regardless of how diligent you are, your puppy could still have an accident in the house during the day, it you see it stooping or peeing, pick it up and let it finish in the garden/yard.
